Bic Afeitadora Amarilla (“Bic Yellow Shaver”)

In 2018 I came across this Bic disposable razor ad from Chile on YouTube, and it remained in my backlog until this week, when I found it while looking for something else. I don’t understand Spanish, but I fell in love with the handsome actor—specifically his wonderful facial expressions—as he shaves and replies to the voice-over narrator. I’m guessing he’s more impressed that the razor he’s using is yellow (“amarilla”) than that it’s giving him a close shave. Go figure.

I’m also guessing that this ad is from the 1980s judging from the video quality, the man’s mullet haircut, and the Bic razor model. I miss this era of shaving ads when an element of humor was regularly injected into the scripts and shaving foam beards were thick and from a can. Great razor and shaving foam/gel ads are still being made, but they don’t seem to come along as often as they did back then. What do you think?

Here’s a Google translation of the dialogue, obviously flawed but still comprehensible:

“What does this Vic shaver have that makes it different? It is yellow. It has a new blade angle for ultra-smooth shaves, and what else? It’s yellow? It has chrome-platinum blades that shave amazingly smooth at the new angle and what else? It’s yellow? It has an exclusive tensioner that stretches the skin just so that the new angle shaves, stroking you as you would ask it shaves vi new angle platinum blade exclusive tensioner does not shave yellow vic that’s enough I don’t see that it is yellow.”

  1. He has a great face for shaving cream. Like you, I miss these older commercials with “less refined” (and foamier) shaving cream on the model’s face.
